The extended and raised section makes it easier to use with larger rudders or in the current. You can also tension it down to help keep your kayak tracking straight so you can spend more time with your hand off the handle. It is made from an acetal base and aluminium CNC machined top. An m6 thread in the front allows you to attach a steering knob to the end if you wish.
